Network all the things.
My name is Anton Smith, and I’m an expert in Kubernetes, OSS, Cloud Native Infrastructure, and Service Provider networking.
I have deep technically oriented individual contributor capabilities combined with leadership skills.
I have particular strengths in edge computing, network design/architecture, and product development.
I code - I build things like RAG databases and proof of concepts to solve difficult problems. I have patents in service provider networking and edge Kubernetes.
I’m a strong team player and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with difficult technical issues to solve.
Products I’ve worked on are deployed globally and power services for millions of people.
Who am I?
My name is Anton Smith, a half-kiwi, half-icelander living in Stockholm, Sweden. Two kids, a dog, and a house.
My passion is IT infrastructure with specific expertise in networking and product development.
I’m hands-on. I love working with technology on a daily basis.
I’ve been living in Sweden since 2008. I’ve built networks. operated networks, built router portfolios at vendors, worked at startups for elderly health tech, and been responsible for the delivery of Kubernetes management platforms used by companies such as GEHC, US Airforce, and more.
In recent years, I work as a consultant for companies in need of my expertise.
My skills and experience
I have hard skills and deep experience with various service provider routing equipment. In particular Cisco, Juniper, and Nokia. I have worked on networks in New Zealand, Iceland, UK, and Scandinavia. I’ve worked on designs for tier 1 to small local ISPs with products such as the 7750 SR, ASR9K, and Juniper MX family. I have worked for Nuage Networks on their SD-WAN product, responsible for features such as NAT-T (NAT Traversal), IPv6, and OSPF. I have had a passion for Internet infrastructure since the beginning of my career.
I have designed and built broadband aggregation networks with TPSDA (Triple-Play service delivery architecture) for IPTV and subscriber management capabilities.
I have expertise and have designed and operated networks with MPLS, OSPF, ISIS, BGP (IX peering and core), route reflectors, DHCP, 802.1q VLANs, EVPN, DNS, VPNv4/v6, IPFIX, SNMP, VxLAN, and more. I also have skills with Wireguard, Tailscale, and IPSec. I personally connected the fibers and configured the routers that connected Iceland to the London Internet Exchange (LINX).
I have worked on monitoring and billing solutions for broadband subscriber management primarily gathering telemetry such as IPFIX records and aggregating them for billing purposes, and tinkered with Nagios, Cacti, and Zabbix for basic monitoring.
I delivered the Router 6000 family at Ericsson, the first dedicated 5G mobile backhaul product family in the world, now powering 5G networks across the globe, and in the process earning a patent in the area of transport-aware RAN.
I have had a passion for Internet infrastructure since the beginning of my career, and I’m proud of my contributions to the industry.
Service Provider Networking
K8s and Cloud Native Infrastructure
During the past 5 years, I have worked at companies at the forefront of OSS and Cloud Native developing their flagship products. Including Canonical, developing MAAS - Metal-as-a-Service for bare metal datacenter clouds where I was responsible for the entire product roadmap. Here I used my strong hands on Ubuntu Linux and product design skills to specify features for execution and also author and produce highly technical and well regarded whitepapers and tutorials on baremetal Kubernetes, viewed by thousands of people.
Canonical MAAS - Metal-as-a-Service - bare metal cloud management
Spectro Cloud Palette - full stack Kubernetes Management
At Spectro Cloud, I am responsible for the product roadmap, feature definition, and execution. I am also responsible for the entire product organization which includes technical Product Management, Documentation, and User Experience (UX). I have built the organization from near zero, using my experience and knowledge to hire top calibre talent and deliver high quality product releases & documentation.
I work hands on with Engineering in addition to managing the product teams - as a contributing technical product manager, including ownership of Spectro Cloud’s Edge Kubernetes offering. In addition, I leverage my MAAS skills to create new solutions such as control plane slicing for better resource utilization for on-prem Kubernetes.
I use my technical skills to build new patent-pending technologies including the innovative Palette Overlay technology which solves network issues specific to Kubernetes in uncontrolled network environments. As an example of my hands on technical skills, I built the first working proof of concept for the network layer of this feature, creating a self-healing VxLAN based overlay and automatic host discovery that works in hostile network environments.
Here, my knowledge and experience with Kubernetes has grown greatly, not only grabbing the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification but working with many of the leading CNCF projects as we integrate them into the product, CNIs such as Cilium, CSIs such as Longhorn, etc. My networking experience has been invaluable working at Spectro Cloud.
Tech skills, programming and development
While I don’t work within an IDE every day, I have strong skills with Python and often use it for prototyping. For example, I built a fully functional proof of concept for the Overlay feature for Palette internally, a RAG based chat bot to support field and sales teams with technical and competitive questions about Palette, and started a webhook adapter for MAAS to enable event driven workflows during machine provisioning.
In addition I have a generalized skillset and comfortable familiarity with Linux, in particular Ubuntu and Debian.
I have a strong solution design and architectural awareness, and when confronted with new problems that need specific outcomes I use this ability to quickly analyze different solution options. I am never afraid of new technologies or projects, and specifically seek out different alternatives to best achieve organizational goals.
For public cloud, I am most comfortable with GCP, but am familiar with common cloud concepts found in AWS/Azure such as serverless, VPCs, VPS, auto-scaling, managed Kubernetes (EKS, AKS, GKE), container-as-a-service, complex networking configurations and policy, RBAC, billing, IDP/OAUTH/SSO etc.
How I can help you
Network Engineering and Architecture
If you need someone to help you work on your network, bringing great experience to supplement your team, lead a team, or work on a project to build out, design, migrate, or replace elements in your network, then I am a great choice.
Due to my deep experience with multiple vendors and my background on backend systems, I am very versatile - speaking Cisco, Juniper, and Nokia fluently yet with ability to contribute on network automations and monitoring systems.
Cloud native
If you’re migrating applications to the cloud, or wondering about your strategy and how to manage all those Kubernetes clusters, keep costs under control, and bring security and governance to your cloud native infrastructure, then I am your guy.
On-prem, hybrid-cloud, multi-cloud or even just single vendor, migrating to and managing containerized applications is a challenge and I can slot in anywhere here and help you.
Product development
Are you building something new? Do you need someone to lead a development team including engineers, designers, and product managers? Or just someone to be an individual contributor?
